Daphne Busby
Daphne Busby is a 75 year old native of Brooklyn, N.Y.: a mother of one son and a self-taught, emerging mixed media abstract artist, since then age 69.. The theme of her work is “Creative Aging” and serves to encourage seniors/ others to stay active in self advocacy, being committed to learning despite aging limitations and be open to discovering/ developing new, creative passions. This theme is reflective of Daphne’s own creative journey which emerged after her 40 years career as founding director of two Brooklyn based family-strengthening not-for-profits. She left to begin her seven year labor of love as her mothers full time caregiver and to address her own challenging arthritic condition. During that time (which included the Covid period) she discovered her penchant of abstract art and it was then that her self-taught creative journey began.
Daphne loves to use bright metallic/ iridescent acrylic colors, mirror paper, bold designs, creative mixed media combination and, fork-swipe/ pour paint process -often with a touch of whimsy. Daphne’s abstract works are derived from pensive self reflections of her 75 years - the emotions, lessons learned, milestones, motivations, challenges. This particularly expressed via her series of over 50 figurative abstract collages where she combines her stylized self images (reflecting ages) images with her mixed media /acrylics abstract.
In 2022, Daphne was selected as a Jamaica Center For Art and Learning (JCAL) Artwork’s seminar Fellowship winner. Daphne was also among the artists exhibiting in the “Crown Heights Art Stroll.” Her solo show at the Joloff Restaurant featured 15 of her acrylic abstracts. Daphne has also presented at “BDRYGOODS Gallery’s ‘First Come-FirstHung’”. Harlem Heath Gallery’s “Hang Night” and Brooklyn’s Greenpoint Gallery on four occasions. Daphne has an active line presence including being designated as a top contributor in Black Abstract Artists (since 2019) and Black Abstract Artists - Figurative- since 2020.
